Live: Trump heads to Kansas rally as Republican voters’ frustrations deepen ahead of midterms — watch at 7 p.m. EDT

Harvest brings higher costs

For Kansas farmers, harvest season means combining fields, transporting crops and moving livestock. Fifth-generation farmer Glenn Brunkow calls this period “go time,” but says this year’s work comes amid mounting financial pressure.

Diesel prices are more than $2.50 per gallon above a year ago, adding to higher costs, uncertain markets and lower profits. Nationwide, diesel averaged $6.30 per gallon on Friday, more than 70% higher than a year earlier, according to AAA. Farmers rely heavily on fuel during harvest to run equipment and haul crops.

Republicans face voter concerns

Kansas is a particular focus: Trump won the state by 16 percentage points over Kamala Harris in 2024, but Republican Sen. Roger Marshall faces a tough contest against Democrat Adam Hamilton. Democrats have not won a Kansas Senate race in 94 years.

Brunkow said economic frustrations might not lead farmers to vote for Democrats, but could reduce their motivation to vote. His organization has endorsed Marshall.

Frustration extends beyond farms

Immigration is another concern, Hineman said, especially after recent raids in western Kansas led to more than 100 people being detained. He said voters can support a secure border while also wanting immigration rules that provide workers the country depends on.

Hineman said warnings that Democrats would empower the party’s liberal wing are losing force for some Kansans, including him. He said he is fed up with Republicans’ support for Trump and willing to consider other options.

Undecided voters weigh choices

Debbie Geneva, 61, of Nortonville, said Hamilton impressed her by visiting a local market and meeting residents. She said she has not seen Marshall do the same and remains undecided in the Senate race, despite never having voted for a Democrat.

Geneva said rising healthcare and everyday expenses have added to her frustration. She also criticized Republican trade agreements, saying they have not benefited the Midwest.
