Kansas City Truck Carrying 130 Cattle Plunges From Overpass, Crushing Car Below

Crash spills cattle downtown

The semitrailer fell from the westbound I-70 curve over southbound I-35 early Sunday, striking a car below. The crash spilled dozens of cattle onto streets in downtown Kansas City.

Animals scatter across streets

Kansas City Police Sgt. Phil DiMartino said the trailer was carrying between 120 and 130 cattle. He said 45 to 60 animals died in the crash. Survivors ran from the scene, leading to additional traffic crashes and numerous calls to law enforcement. Kansas City Fire Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins said some cattle traveled several miles before they were secured.

Search efforts and traffic

In an updated statement Sunday afternoon, DiMartino said officials believed all the cattle had been accounted for. Roads were closed during the response, but officials did not expect major disruptions for fans attending the Kansas City Chiefs’ game against the Los Angeles Chargers that day, citing extensive public notification.
