$220 Billion: Amazon Knows How to Build, but the AI Boom Is Testing Investor Confidence
A record infrastructure bet
Amazon’s spending has shifted sharply from a growing cash reserve to a major construction push. The company expects to invest $220 billion this year in the physical infrastructure behind AI.
Amazon has previously invested heavily in cloud computing, fulfillment centers and its delivery network. Those bets faced investor skepticism before becoming some of the company’s most valuable businesses.
Confidence meets investor concern
CEO Andy Jassy said Amazon has a “clear line of sight” to strong financial returns, and described AI as a “once in a lifetime opportunity.” In his shareholder letter, he said the company would not be conservative in its investments. Investors are concerned that AI data centers cost more to build and take longer to complete. Dan Ives of Yorkville Ives said markets are reassessing investments that require years of construction before revenue arrives.
Power delays rack deployment
Some AWS sites had room for additional server racks but lacked enough power to operate them, according to people familiar with the effort. As a result, equipment was held at intermediary warehouses until sites were ready. Internal emails from August showed Amazon preparing an “Early Rack Receipt” process for server racks containing Nvidia GB300 chips. An Amazon spokesperson said staging finished hardware near deployment sites is “best business practice.”
Timing could affect returns
Amazon usually does not pay for racks until they reach a data center, leaving suppliers to cover equipment costs while it is in transit, according to internal documents. The scale of the building push has made coordination harder as Amazon competes for GPUs and other AI components.
Delays in installing racks and connecting them to reliable power could push back revenue from the investment. AWS CFO John Felton asked how businesses can plan for a future that is inherently uncertain; AI infrastructure leader Prasad Kalyanaraman said Amazon’s internal return outlook had improved, though its assumptions continue to shift.
