Jeffries Likes Democrats’ Chances in Ohio Race for House as He Campaigns

Jeffries campaigns in Toledo

Jeffries visited church services in Toledo on Sunday before campaigning for Kaptur. He described the political climate for Democrats as holding firm as they try to retake the House.

He said Democrats were making a case for major change and for policies to make the country more affordable. Kaptur said her work extends beyond election campaigns to improving people’s lives.

Ohio contests shape control

Ohio is fiercely contested in the midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress. The state’s House races are being fought district by district, with Kaptur’s race among those seen as important to the chamber’s majority.

Attention has also focused on the Senate contest between Republican Sen. Jon Husted and Democrat Sherrod Brown. Jeffries called Kaptur a legendary figure in the Great Lakes Region and predicted she would defy expectations.

Ukraine criticism enters campaign

Jeffries criticized the U.S. president over Ukraine, telling The Associated Press that the president had undermined democracy, freedom and dignity for Ukrainians. The district has a large Ukrainian American population, and Kaptur founded and co-chairs the bipartisan Congressional Ukraine Caucus.

Kaptur said the president had sided with Putin and called his actions un-American. House Speaker Mike Johnson said some colleagues had raised concerns and that the issue deserved careful consideration of unintended consequences. He said he had not yet discussed it with Trump, who he said was evaluating the situation.
