Nevada Republicans eye redrawing lone Democratic-held district if they win; democrats, republicans seek 2026 midterms trifectas

Pennsylvania and Minnesota contests

In Pennsylvania, Democrats hold the state House, 103 to 100, while Republicans control the Senate, 27 to 23. Democrats aim to gain three Senate seats and keep the governorship if Gov. Josh Shapiro wins reelection. Only half the Senate seats are up this year.

At a campaign event in Bucks County, Shapiro said voters could help his administration “get more stuff done here in Pennsylvania.” Minnesota’s House is split, with 67 Democrats, 66 Republicans and one vacancy in a GOP-leaning district. Democrats need one net gain for full control; they already hold the Senate, 34 to 33, and the governorship.

Nevada and Arizona strategies

Democrats have comfortable majorities in both Nevada legislative chambers and are seeking to unseat Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo. Republican State Leadership Committee President Edith Jorge-Tuñón told ABC News the group is making targeted investments to help Republicans contend with historical headwinds and preserve as many majorities as possible.

With a trifecta, Republicans could pursue redrawing Nevada’s only Democratic-held congressional district, an effort previously blocked by the state’s term-limited Democratic governor. In Arizona, Democrats hope to take both Republican-controlled legislative chambers, while Republicans are aiming to win the governor’s office.

Michigan races and policy stakes

Michigan has a Democratic governor and a divided legislature. Democrats need four net seats to take the House, where Republicans lead 58 to 52. Republicans need two net seats to control the Senate, currently held by Democrats, 20 to 18; they are also seeking the governorship.

A Republican operative familiar with state politics told ABC News that GOP gubernatorial candidates trailing in polls in Arizona and Pennsylvania could weigh on down-ballot candidates, even if those candidates perform better. In Michigan, a Democratic trifecta could pursue education, prescription drug pricing, ethics and voting-rights measures, according to The Detroit News and Votebeat. Republicans could seek voting changes, including proof-of-citizenship requirements, while candidate John James has emphasized affordability and safety.

Key points

  • Pennsylvania Democrats need three net Senate seats and hope Gov. Josh Shapiro wins reelection.
  • Minnesota Democrats need one net House seat to gain full control of state government.
  • Nevada Republicans are targeting the governorship and could pursue redistricting if they win a trifecta.
  • Michigan Democrats and Republicans are both seeking legislative control, with the governorship also at stake.
