Brazil’s Lula and Bolsonaro clash in heated presidential debate before runoff

Policy disputes turn personal

The candidates discussed the economy, security, corruption and Brazil’s ties with the United States. Their disagreement eventually shifted from policy to pointed personal criticism. Bolsonaro faulted Lula over living costs, public safety and social spending, accusing him of using public money irresponsibly to win another term. Lula described Bolsonaro as “a habitual liar, a thug,” and referred to alleged links with Rio de Janeiro paramilitary groups.

Accusations over corruption and US ties

Lula said, “Lying is the Bolsonaro family’s strong suit.” Bolsonaro answered by accusing Lula of corruption and joking that he should keep his distance to protect his wallet. Lula also criticized the family’s relationship with US President Donald Trump. He alleged Bolsonaro was conspiring to hand Brazil’s rare earth minerals to the United States.

Runoff campaign fills city streets

The runoff is set for October 25, and the next debate is scheduled for Friday, October 23. Bolsonaro finished almost two points ahead of Lula in the first round earlier this month.

Tens of thousands of supporters rallied in cities including Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Bolsonaro supporters in Sao Paulo called for Jair Bolsonaro’s release, while Lula supporters held a democracy rally at Copacabana Beach; similar events took place in Brasilia and 16 other state capitals.

Jair Bolsonaro’s sentence

The candidates also discussed Jair Bolsonaro, Flavio’s father and a former president. He is serving a 27-year sentence under house arrest over an attempted coup following his unsuccessful 2022 re-election bid.
