South Africa, Australia: Hosts' batting issues exposed again as Scott Boland takes four, leaving 97-5

Rain threat gives way to play

Scott Boland, selected after Australia left spinner Nathan Lyon out, led the attack with four wickets. His precise line and length made scoring difficult for South Africa’s batters.

Boland puts pressure on debutant

Boland found a length that drew debutant Marques Ackerman forward. Ackerman edged the ball through to wicketkeeper Alex Carey, becoming the 85th victim of Boland’s 20-Test career. Ackerman was making his first appearance opening against the red ball. His selection as one of two batting changes after South Africa’s first-Test defeat highlighted the challenges facing the hosts.

Other batters struggle to settle

Breetzke made four from 17 deliveries, with little movement of his feet, before trying to force Mitchell Starc through the covers. He was dismissed after playing loosely from the back foot.

Pat Cummins also troubled Breetzke with bouncers late in the day. Matt Renshaw took a difficult catch at first slip, reaching out with his right hand to hold a top edge above the ground.

Numbers underline Boland’s threat

A separate measure said 84% of Boland’s deliveries had landed on a good length. Starc, by comparison, had bowled only 29% on a good line and length. The report leaves open whether Boland’s success reflects his suitability for seaming conditions or a case for more opportunities.

Bavuma carries South Africa’s hopes

Temba Bavuma was unbeaten on 41 at the close, with seamer Kagiso Rabada also important to South Africa’s prospects. The hosts may need substantial contributions as they try to recover.

South Africa’s batting remained a concern after the day’s dismissals. Australia ended the day in control, while the hosts faced pressure to show greater resilience.
