Brighton’s free-scoring Seagulls: genuine Premier League title contenders or early-season dream?

A powerful start to the season

Jack Hinshelwood’s goal against Crystal Palace completed Brighton’s fourth consecutive Premier League win. The team’s aggregate score across those victories was 15-0. Fabian Hurzeler’s side have paired attacking output with a strong defence. No team has scored more or conceded fewer goals in the league, and Brighton have 23 goals after seven matches.

Goals from across the squad

Brighton lost Joao Pedro to Chelsea in the summer of 2025, and Danny Welbeck later moved to Stamford Bridge. Charalampos Kostoulas, a 19-year-old Greece striker who was mainly a substitute last season, has taken on a central role and recorded three league goals and two assists.

Hinshelwood, Yasin Ayari, Malick Yalcouye and Maxim de Cuyper support Kostoulas, while Pascal Gross has taken on a deeper role. Only Barcelona, with 39 goals in nine La Liga games, have scored more domestic league goals than Brighton across Europe’s top five leagues.

Title hopes and realistic targets

Alan Wares, co-host of the Albion Roar podcast, said Champions League qualification was the club’s aim. He called a title challenge “fantasy stuff” at this stage, while adding that supporters could still dream.

History offers some encouragement: all but one of the seven previous Premier League teams to score at least 23 goals after seven games finished in the top three. Leicester City, the last outsider to win the title, were eighth on 12 points after seven matches in 2015-16.

Challenges remain ahead

Conference League commitments could make it difficult for Brighton to sustain their form against teams such as Arsenal over the full season. The club’s final league position could also be affected by an off-pitch matter, though its details and outcome are not stated.

For now, Brighton are enjoying a strong start and have earned their place near the top of the table. Whether that becomes a title challenge remains uncertain.
