Russia and Ukraine trade blows on power infrastructure; two killed, at least 17 injured

Drone strikes hit Russian sites
Ukraine used more than 1,000 drones in an overnight attack on Russian oil depots, logistics facilities and datacentres. One person was killed and 15 wounded, according to the report.
St Petersburg governor Alexander Beglov said fires broke out at an oil terminal, an oil depot and industrial warehouses. Ozon confirmed its logistics centre was targeted, while local technology company VK said its datacentre was also hit.
Power cuts and damage in Ukraine
Alexander Drozdenko, governor of the Leningrad region around St Petersburg, said air defences had downed 145 drones and about 20,000 people were without electricity. He described the attack on Telegram as a large-scale drone assault still being repelled.
In Zaporizhzhia, Russian strikes killed a woman and wounded at least two people, including a six-year-old girl, local officials said. Regional military administration head Mykhailo Semikin said two apartment buildings, 18 cars and an educational institution were damaged.
Ceasefire collapses amid tensions
The strikes followed the breakdown of Donald Trump’s short-lived energy ceasefire, which neither side said it had agreed to in advance. Moscow continued attacks on Ukraine’s power grid, while Kyiv resumed strikes on Russian oil refineries.
Russia’s defence ministry said its air defence units had brought down 1,015 Ukrainian drones overnight. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russia was responding with systematic, large-scale strikes, according to Tass.
Further attacks and diplomatic strain
Russia said a major overnight attack on Saturday hit Ukraine’s largest steelworks in Kryvyi Rih and vessels using the port of Odesa. Its defence ministry also reported strikes on an electricity substation in Zhytomyr and another steel plant in Zaporizhzhia.
Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said Russia had attacked Ukrainian energy, oil and gas sectors 76 times in the week after Trump announced the ceasefire. He said energy facilities in four regions were hit the previous night and tens of thousands of families remained without power. Trump, meanwhile, said he was pausing a new sanctions package passed by both chambers of Congress.
