Costco price tracker stays pretty stable as increases hit oil and protein

A mostly steady basket

Prices tracked on local warehouse shelves remained relatively calm despite turbulent global news. Costco aims to keep warehouse prices close to wholesale levels, making its shelves one way to observe supply-cost pressures.

The tracked basket increased 2.3% between January, when it cost $864.60, and October 13, when it reached $884.60. The figures reflect one community in Madison, Wisconsin, rather than a national measure.

Protein shortages lift costs

By June, the basket was about $10 below its April peak. Small declines across much of the list helped offset a $10 increase in whey protein. Whey protein supplies have remained tight, with shortages continuing to put pressure on availability. The item was one of the clearest exceptions to the basket’s otherwise modest movement.

Oil and berries rise

Refining bottlenecks and attacks on oil infrastructure have pushed diesel prices higher, increasing transportation costs. Those pressures add to concerns about costs across food supply chains. Blueberries rose from $3.99 in July to $8.99 in October, more than doubling in price. Fresh berry prices varied by a few dollars during the year, leaving it unclear whether the increase reflects seasonal supply, transportation costs, or both.

Cost pressures may build

Food suppliers and grocers have warned of rising costs as tariff refunds near completion and energy prices climb. The tracked prices have so far shown limited overall movement, though those pressures could change that picture.
