How My Dad’s Death Gave Me Perspective: I Value Experiences Over Money

A sudden shift in priorities

The writer says her father’s sudden death changed her relationship with work. She had once been willing to burn herself out, but that drive disappeared when he died in September 2024.

The change did not come from an inheritance or ongoing depression. The months after his death were very dark, she says, but she is now doing well mentally and describes the shift as a reshuffling of priorities.

Earlier in 2024, she had also nearly died in a horse-riding accident. Doctors could not understand how she survived without becoming paraplegic.

A life remembered through stories

Her father, a beloved doctor, died of a heart attack at 65. Hundreds of people sent messages recalling his generosity, kindness, adventurous spirit, talent, humor, and chaotic nature.

He took up kitesurfing in his 50s and drove hours to the nearest dam for sessions. His last time kitesurfing was the week before he died. He was also an astronomer, chess player, artist, rugby fan, friend, husband, and father. The writer says the many stories made the breadth of his life seem almost mythical.

Working to meet her needs

The writer has not quit work, but says she never returned to her previous pace. She continues to work with luxury travel copywriting clients, do journalism, and coach essay writers.

She earns enough each month to cover her mortgage, retirement savings, and health insurance. Once those costs are covered, she eases off work and turns her attention to life outside it.

Trying to follow his example

She says she has not worked out what life without her father will look like. Still, she remembers how much he fit into his years. She sees living with the same appetite for experience as a way to honor him.
