Shanghai track cycling world championships: Emma Finucane vows to come back fighting after narrowly missing gold

A narrow margin in Shanghai
Finucane finished 14 thousandths of a second off first place to earn bronze at the Track Cycling World Championships. It was her third near miss for gold at the event.
She had already taken silver in the team sprint and individual sprint, with Chinese cyclists winning both races. Finucane said medalling in all three races was a first for her at the world championships.
Proud, but still frustrated
Speaking to BBC Sport, Finucane said she was proud of her results, but frustrated not to stand on the top step. She said she would return to competition fighting for gold medals.
Finucane added that she was learning from each race and did not want to dwell on setbacks. She previously won bronze in the individual sprint and keirin at the Paris Olympics.
British team looks ahead
Finucane won Britain’s first Olympic gold in the women’s team sprint, alongside Katy Marchant and Sophie Capewell. She said the depth of the British team could help drive success at the 2028 LA Games. She described internal competition as important to winning races, adding that world records were continuing to fall as teammates pushed one another.
