Canada fire at Alberta base: Multiple deaths, injuries after explosion sparks disaster

Fire at Wainwright base

A major fire broke out at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta. Prime Minister Mark Carney described it as a serious incident and said he was working with the provincial government and local authorities.

Fire crews responded late into the night as strong winds carried flames beyond the base and into nearby rural areas. The cause of the incident was not stated.

Officials confirm casualties

The Canadian Armed Forces confirmed that the incident resulted in fatalities and injuries. It said it would not release casualty or injury details until next of kin had been informed.

Hospitals face heavy demand

Patients were being taken to hospitals across Edmonton, about 180 kilometres northwest of the base. A doctor told CBC News that health-care facilities were overwhelmed by the number of people needing care.

Dr. Warren Thirsk, an emergency department physician at Royal Alexandra Hospital, said the number of patients would overwhelm the city. He described the event as a disaster that occurs once every 15 to 25 years.

Support and notifications underway

Carney said he and Alberta Premier Smith were in close contact, along with relevant ministers and officials. He said his thoughts were with those affected. Chief of the defence staff General Jennie Carignan said the military’s immediate focus was supporting affected people, assisting emergency response efforts and caring for members, families and the surrounding community. She extended condolences to those who had lost loved ones.
