Sacramento mother describes son’s actions during deadly Oregon school shooting

A confrontation at the school

Freeman told CBS News Sacramento that Giamanco entered through a window the gunman had shot out. She said he told her afterward that the shooter had entered his daughter’s school and shot children.

Casualties and survivors

Authorities said three children and a teacher were killed before Giamanco fatally shot the suspect. Another child and a teacher were wounded and were still hospitalized Friday. Both of Giamanco’s children survived the attack. Community members and Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek praised his actions, according to the report.

Emotional toll on Giamanco

Freeman said her son is troubled by the thought that he could not save everyone. She described him questioning what he might have done differently as he relives the events.

Giamanco works as a contractor and has been familiar with firearms for much of his life. Freeman said he grew up hunting and legally owns and carries his firearm.

Family focuses on recovery

Freeman said the family is not focused on broader political debates as they process the shooting. She described Giamanco as someone who cares deeply about those around him. Freeman spoke exclusively with CBS News Sacramento about her son’s actions and the emotional strain she says he has faced since the attack.
