1,153hp Mercedes-AMG unveils its first ground-up electric SUV beast, rated at 1,150hp

A new chapter for AMG

The 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV is the performance brand’s first full-size SUV developed entirely in-house. Mercedes-AMG says the project marks a first in its 59-year history. Built on the AMG.EA architecture, the electric SUV is intended to combine sports-car handling with the practicality of a full-size vehicle. It is scheduled to arrive in the US next summer.

Three trims, flagship power

The lineup will include the GT 53, GT 55 and GT 63. The top trim uses three axial flux motors and produces 1,153 horsepower, matching the powertrain in the AMG GT four-door coupe.

The article says the GT 63 can out-muscle the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric with Launch Control. It also reports a curb weight of 5,941 pounds, below the listed figures for the Lotus Eletre R and Lucid Gravity, and close to the Porsche’s.

Fast charging and battery details

An 800-volt electrical system supports charging speeds of up to 710kW for the 128kWh battery in the GT 55 and GT 63. The GT 53’s 106kWh battery supports up to 600kW.

Mercedes says charging from 10 to 80 percent takes 12 minutes, while a 10-minute charge can add up to 450km, or about 280 miles, of WLTP range. The 128kWh versions are estimated to offer up to 435 miles of range.

The battery uses NCMA cathodes, silicon-containing anodes and cylindrical cells. Nonconductive oil circulates around each cell to manage temperature, according to the report.

Handling, sound and cabin tech

The SUV uses active hydraulic suspension elements in place of traditional mechanical roll bars, along with three-stage air springs and standard six-degree active rear-wheel steering. The system is designed to limit body movement during acceleration, braking and cornering.

To preserve AMG’s performance character, the vehicle plays recorded sounds of AMG V8 and six-cylinder engines. It also simulates gear changes through paddle controls and can provide seat vibrations; AMGFORCE Sport+ is standard on all three trims.

The cabin features a 14-inch display running MB.OS, with AI services from ChatGPT, Microsoft and Google. Mercedes’ onboard voice system can also adjust climate controls, drive modes and lighting.
