Oregon school teen kills 4; DOJ sues California over alleged ballots linked to noncitizens

Four killed in Bend shooting
A teenager opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, killing three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a teacher, officials said. A 7-year-old and a 54-year-old were hospitalized.
Local officials said a bystander followed the 16-year-old suspected shooter into the school and killed him. The teen’s identity has not been released, and officials said he lived in Bend. His connection to the school remains unclear.
Police said the shooter used a long gun and entered by firing at locked doors. Officers arrived within minutes, according to NPR’s Arezou Rezvani, and a community member shot the suspect soon afterward.
Justice Department sues California
The Justice Department has filed suit to stop California from counting ballots it says are linked to noncitizens. Three weeks before Election Day, the department sent Los Angeles County’s top voting official a flash drive listing 20,000 people it suspected were noncitizens and gave him 48 hours to investigate.
California and election experts have questioned the administration’s claims, citing President Trump’s history of misinformation on the subject and data analysis that can produce false positives, NPR’s Miles Parks reported. Vote-by-mail ballots for upcoming elections had already been sent.
The department wants ballots connected to its claims segregated for investigation so they are not counted. Parks said success in the lawsuit would be surprising, noting that the Constitution gives states responsibility for managing elections.
Dispute over presidential records
Congress created the Presidential Records Act after disputes involving Richard Nixon. The article says presidents had personally decided how to handle their papers for about 200 years, and that every president followed the records law until this year, when the Trump administration moved to invalidate it.
The move followed Trump’s indictment on obstruction-of-justice charges over alleged possession of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago. A federal judge dismissed that case on technical grounds.
