Talarico Compares Campaign to David and Goliath as GOP Invests $158M Against Him

A David and Goliath appeal

Speaking at a packed Thursday rally, Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico invoked the biblical fight between David and Goliath. He told the crowd that David lacked Goliath’s strength but had a slingshot.

“You are my slingshot,” Talarico told supporters, adding, “We are going up against our own Goliaths.” He did not mention Elon Musk or the spending directed against him. The message reflects Talarico’s effort to frame politics as a contest between the ultrawealthy and everyone else, rather than simply a clash between left and right. At the rally, he blamed billionaires and corrupt politicians for rising costs.

A competitive Texas race

Talarico, a state representative and seminarian, is seeking to become the first Democrat to win statewide in Texas in more than 30 years. His campaign has raised record sums in one of the country’s costliest and most competitive Senate contests.

He was initially regarded as one of several Democrats who might help flip Texas, a prospect that had faded for others on Election Day. He is now considered a genuine challenger to Republican Ken Paxton.

Paxton has faced corruption questions and was impeached by fellow Republicans in the Texas Legislature before being acquitted. Talarico’s fundraising has outpaced Paxton’s, while outside spending supporting Paxton has filled Texas airwaves with advertisements.

Spending and Senate control

Campaign spending filings showed Musk contributed $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund. That group gave $158 million to Texas PAC, identified as Paxton’s largest contributor. Musk also provided $10 million to Lone Star Liberty PAC, which supports Paxton. The article reports more than $158 million in outside spending by Republican leadership and Musk against Talarico.

The race could affect which party controls the Senate during Trump’s final two years in office. A Republican victory would ease the president’s path, while a Democratic win could bring investigations and opposition.

Talarico’s broader strategy

Talarico has campaigned across major cities, border communities that shifted from blue to red in the last election, and rural Republican areas. He has also distanced himself from Joe Biden’s administration and his own party.

Progressive Sen. Bernie Sanders is scheduled to visit Texas this month, but will not appear onstage with Talarico. The candidate has focused his message on the growing cost of living.
