Oregon elementary school shooter stopped by father of 2 students, CBC reports

A parent intervened inside school

The man who stopped the attack is the father of two girls enrolled at Silver Rail Elementary, his mother said Friday. Police said the suspect was found dead inside the school, but have not publicly identified who shot him.

Oregon Gov. Kotek expressed support for the person who intervened, saying the act could carry a serious emotional toll. Bend Police Chief Olsen said she was grateful someone acted before law enforcement arrived.

Four people died in attack

Three children, aged five, eight and 11, and one teacher were killed, police said. A seven-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were taken to hospital in critical condition.

The attacker used a pump-action shotgun bought by his mother, a law enforcement official briefed on the case told The Associated Press. The official spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly. Police said they did not know whether the shooter had ties to the school or had attended it.

Calls brought officers to school

Silver Rail serves kindergarten through Grade 5 and had about 450 students enrolled last year. Classes and other activities were cancelled Friday at all 32 schools in the area.

Community mourns victims

Flowers, balloons and stuffed animals were placed near the school, located among newly built homes in a densely populated neighbourhood. A candlelight vigil was also held at Drake Park.
