Italy cuts traffic in half amid data transmission issue, disrupting flights

Restrictions follow network problem

Italian air travelers faced delays and cancellations on Friday after a problem affected the country’s air traffic control systems. ENAV, the air traffic control authority, said a data transmission issue prompted temporary limits on flights.

ENAV said it first detected the problem overnight and restricted traffic at about 6 a.m., when the number of scheduled services rose. The authority said it was operating at 50% of total air traffic capacity while prioritizing safety.

Authority rules out foul play

ENAV ruled out malicious activity as the cause, including the possibility of a cyberattack. It said flights remained safe throughout the disruption. The authority said it was using all available resources to reduce disruption and restore full operations. ENAV also said it had ensured the greatest possible number of departures that morning, including intercontinental flights.

Rome and Milan warn passengers

Airports in Rome and Milan warned travelers that disruptions were likely. Rome airports operator ADR said delays and cancellations could occur and advised passengers to contact their airline if they were unsure. Milan airports company SEA issued a similar notice.
