Wrap: Trump Reverses Course on Livestreamed Execution of Fort Hood Shooter After Bipartisan Criticism

Execution broadcast plan canceled

Trump canceled plans to livestream Hasan’s execution, scheduled for December, as criticism grew across party lines. Hasan was identified as the Fort Hood shooter. In an online post, Trump said he continued to think broadcasting the execution could deter others. He also said many well-meaning people would prefer not to see Hasan die.

Letters and Oregon shooting

Federal law enforcement agencies are examining letters sent to congressional and state election officials that contained substances described as suspicious. The FBI said it was investigating each incident and working with partners to identify who was responsible.

In Bend, Oregon, police reported multiple victims after a shooting at an elementary school. Children were among them, officials said, and at least two people were hospitalized; the children’s status was unclear.

Deadly collapse in Pakistan

A private school roof collapsed during morning classes in Peshawar, Northwest Pakistan, killing at least 34 children and a teacher. Authorities said rescue workers arrived within minutes and that everyone trapped was eventually brought out.

The children killed or injured were between 6 and 14 years old and lived in the school’s neighborhood. Thousands of mourners later attended a mass funeral.
