Compare pages and manage open tabs as ChatGPT learns to peek inside Chrome

Using open Chrome tabs

OpenAI says ChatGPT can now view open browser tabs when a user tags Chrome in the web or desktop app. A demo shows ChatGPT comparing three open tabs about sofas someone is considering. OpenAI’s sample prompts include using an event brief to fill in a registration form without submitting it, and comparing contractors before drafting an email to a suitable renovation service.

ChatGPT in the sidebar

The update also brings ChatGPT to Chrome’s sidebar, where users can access their conversation history in Chat or Work without leaving the page they are viewing. ChatGPT Work can control Chrome tabs for tasks such as sending messages, filling out forms and downloading files. OpenAI also says it can organize or group open tabs.

A change after Atlas

The upgrade follows the end of OpenAI’s ChatGPT Atlas browser. Rather than requiring that browser, the Chrome extension works with tabs users already have open. The tab-control feature is similar to Google’s Gemini-powered “auto browse” feature.

Key points

  • ChatGPT can view open Chrome tabs when users tag Chrome in its web or desktop app.
  • The extension can compare pages and help draft an email based on information in open tabs.
  • ChatGPT Work can control, organize or group Chrome tabs.
