An Arkansas school district filed a lawsuit against a teenager who it accidentally sent $12,000 in a payroll mix-up, according to a report.
Guereca, from Springdale about 165 miles away from North Little Rock, does not work for the district as an employee or contractor but still withdrew the deposits that were marked “NLR School Dist PAYROLL,” according to the lawsuit.
The teen’s account had no money in it when the first deposit was received, and after the money was withdrawn, the account had a negative balance, the lawsuit claims.
The certified letter was returned to its sender on September 30. The other letter sent through standard mail was not returned, according to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit accuses Guereca of conversion and unjust enrichment by acting as the owner of the money, a felony offense, since the amount of money is over $1,000.
It was not immediately clear whether the teen had any connection to the district, or how the money accidentally ended up in her account. The Independent has contacted North Little Rock School District for more information.
Guereca has 30 days, or until November 8, to respond to the lawsuit, according to the report.
