Ex-Trump donor who Kimberly Guilfoyle begged to pay off her Amex bill vows to sue her

Former donor Deters says he intends to bring a defamation case against Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. ambassador to Greece. He says he did not owe her money and denies her lawyers’ claim that she was owed $150,000 for consulting and speaking work.

Messages reported by The Wall Street Journal show Guilfoyle asking Deters for $100,000 to pay her American Express bill. Deters told CNN the messages did not describe a debt he owed.

Deters alleges Guilfoyle asked him to create a letter falsely stating that he owed her money. He says he agreed to write it, but did not send her the requested funds.

Guilfoyle’s lawyers initially challenged the messages’ authenticity without providing details. The dispute matters because senior U.S. officials say President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are considering whether she should remain in her post.

A senior official said a decision about Guilfoyle’s future was expected this week. Rubio had recently visited Athens, where Guilfoyle joined his public events as the allegations were circulating.
