Critics warn of espionage as Slovakia restores military-diplomatic contact with Russia

Slovakia has restored military-diplomatic representation with Russia for the first time since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The government supports the decision, while critics question its benefits.

Two Slovak officers, Brigadier General Slavomir Staviarsky and Colonel Ivo Gahir, have been sent to Moscow. Slovakia is also preparing to host a Russian military representative in Bratislava.

Prime Minister Robert Fico discussed restoring military attaches with Russian President Vladimir Putin in May, saying relations should reach beyond energy. Staviarsky has reportedly been in Moscow since early August.

Opposition figures say the arrangement could help Russian intelligence and undermine confidence among NATO partners. Former lawmaker Martin Poliacik said the appointment’s political message matters more than its practical effect.

Opposition defense experts identified the prospective Russian attache as Maxim Verezan and said Slovakia had approved him. He had not yet appeared on the published list of accredited military attaches. The Russian posting is expected to proceed.

Key points

  • Slovakia has sent two military officers to Moscow and plans to host a Russian attache.
  • Critics warn the move could aid Russian intelligence and weaken trust among NATO allies.
  • The reported incoming officer, Maxim Verezan, was not yet listed as accredited.
