Australia vs England: Jacob Bethell returns as Thomas Rew and Eddie Jack get call-ups
Jacob Bethell is back in England’s squads for the white-ball matches in Australia. Somerset wicketkeeper-batter Thomas Rew, 18, and Hampshire fast bowler Eddie Jack, 21, have received their first international selections.
England will rest several players during the five-match T20 series as they prepare for the Test tour of South Africa. The schedule includes five overseas tours this winter, prompting the team to rotate its T20 lineup.
Jofra Archer returns for the one-day internationals after missing the October tri-series in Pakistan. He will then sit out the T20s, along with Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue, Sonny Baker and Ben Duckett, to get ready for South Africa.
Rew has recorded strong figures in domestic cricket, averaging 68 in four first-class games for Somerset and 44 in List A matches, with a T20 strike rate of 153. He is James Rew’s younger brother; James made his England Test debut in June.
Rew and Jack were given development central contracts on Monday. They could earn their first caps against Australia, with the opening T20 scheduled for 21 November at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Bethell’s selection in both squads also feeds into England’s upcoming choices for the South Africa Tests.
