Microsoft giveth and Microsoft taketh away: Copilot edition

Microsoft is expanding Copilot in one area and scaling it back in another. Users will be able to create Office documents in the Copilot app, while Copilot-powered Outlook themes are being discontinued.

The new documents can be shared, allowing other people to use prompts to modify them. The feature is currently limited to Frontier customers using Chat and Cowork.

The tool depends on OneDrive rather than SharePoint, which could make it less appealing to some organizations. Its narrow initial availability also limits who can try it.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is ending Outlook’s Copilot theme feature for licensed users. It could generate changing designs using local imagery and, when location access was enabled, update them periodically.

The changes highlight uncertainty about how long Microsoft will maintain individual Copilot features. The article gives no timeline for broader access to document creation or further details on the Outlook feature’s removal.

Key points

  • Copilot users can create and share Office documents, with others able to revise them using prompts.
  • The document feature is limited to Frontier customers using Chat and Cowork, and relies on OneDrive.
  • Microsoft is discontinuing Copilot-made Outlook themes; no removal timeline is provided.
