Andy Burnham promises ‘serious dialogue’ over UK’s relationship with EU

Andy Burnham says the UK should discuss its long-term relationship with the European Union, arguing that current arrangements are inadequate. He described turning away from closer ties as a failure of responsibility.

A UK-EU summit is scheduled for 20 November. The sides aim to reach agreements covering food and drink, youth mobility and emissions trading; Burnham says such deals could add £10bn a year to the economy.

Trade could complicate the talks. UK industries are concerned that proposed “Made in Europe” rules may exclude British manufacturers, and Burnham said he would raise those concerns with EU leaders.

Burnham said he was not trying to reopen the Brexit debate and respects the referendum result. He argued that practical cooperation with the EU could support growth and help address migration and security.

The UK is outside EU systems used to share information about asylum seekers and to determine where some refugees should be returned. Both sides expect progress on other summit issues, including a possible food and plant-health agreement.
