We met on a 7th-grade field trip. Twenty years later, I secretly recreated it and we rekindled our romance.

The writer says her childhood diary records meeting her future husband on a seventh-grade school trip to Canobie Lake Park, north of Boston. They began dating years later and married, but having a baby brought a demanding new routine.

As their daughter grew, the couple’s relationship took a back seat to parenting, work and home projects. With the couple nearing 18 months as parents, the writer wanted to bring back some romance.

She arranged a surprise visit to the amusement park, enlisting two friends and using a nearby winery as a false destination. They drove together, then turned toward Canobie Lake Park with swimsuits tucked away in the car.

The husband was delighted by the unexpected arrival. The group spent five hours at the park, revisiting rides and enjoying the experience as adults rather than nervous teenagers.

The outing reminded the couple how much fun they could have together, the writer says. Their return to the place where they first met gave them a chance to reconnect while adjusting to life as parents.
