7.7-Magnitude Panama Earthquake Sets Off Series of Aftershocks

A powerful earthquake struck Panama shortly before 1 p.m. local time, with the University of Panama’s Institute of Geosciences locating it near the southern town of Tonosí.
The US Geological Survey measured the quake at magnitude 7.6. The Panamanian institute reported a magnitude of 6.0 for a second quake that followed at 1:22 p.m.
Tsunami warnings were issued along the west coast of Central and South America. The Guardian reported that potentially hazardous waves could reach from Ecuador to Mexico and that 13 aftershocks had been reported.
Images published by La Prensa showed damage to buildings in Penonomé, including St John Baptist Cathedral, and a highway west of Panama City split by the quake. President José Raúl Mulino urged people not to spread alarm.
