India's Infosys, Tata, Wipro and HCL suspended from US green card filings
In a setback for Indian IT workers, the United States has suspended Infosys, Tata, Wipro and HCL from its Permanent Labor Certification program.
The certification allows employers to apply for green cards for H-1B visa workers.
The Indian companies are on a list of eight major tech firms, including Microsoft, which have been barred from applying for the program under which foreign employees can work permanently in the US.
The Trump administration said an alleged abuse of the program was behind its decision.
"I am hereby suspending from the Permanent Labor Certification program some of the largest IT outsourcing firms in the world, Cognizant, Infosys, Tata, Wipro, HCL, and Capgemini," Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling said Thursday.
Sonderling said the suspensions were due to ongoing federal investigations into the companies.
Indian media reports have said that the move could potentially impact thousands of the country's IT professionals.
