Medical experts on plague risks after reported death of lab worker in Russia

Russian officials are investigating the death of a 28-year-old worker at an anti-plague research institute in Irkutsk, Siberia. They have not confirmed reports that the suspected illness was pneumonic plague.

Officials say people who came into contact with the worker tested negative. Pneumonic plague is a serious lung infection; symptoms can include shortness of breath and coughing, sometimes with blood-stained phlegm.

World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called for timely and transparent information-sharing to resolve conflicting reports and assess any public health risk.

US President Donald Trump said he plans to discuss the death with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
