Woman at centre of Cornell rape allegation targeted with threats, her lawyer says | CBC News

The lawyer for the woman identified as Jane Doe said Sunday she has faced intimidation since accusing Cornell students of drugging and sexually assaulting her. Attorney Giuffra said in a CNN interview, "She's received multiple threats," and added that he had also been threatened.

The accuser's identity has become a focus of intense discussion online. Many women have shared #IamJaneDoe messages in support and to push back against efforts to reveal her name.

Independent journalist Michael Tracey shared what he described as her name on Friday, then deleted the post. Reuters said it could not confirm the information. Tracey told Reuters on Sunday he did not want to promote threats or harassment toward her.

Cornell president Michael Kotlikoff said in a Saturday video statement the school will review the place of fraternities and sororities on campus after criticism of its response. The lawsuit was filed last month, and prosecutors in Tompkins County have faced complaints about their early handling of the claims in 2024.

New York's governor has appointed a special prosecutor for the sexual assault case. The university review, the outside prosecution and the ongoing lawsuit are expected to shape the next steps.

Key points
