As GLP-1s reshape America, questions and new uses emerge

GLP-1 medications have become widely used in the United States. An estimated one in eight Americans takes some form of the drugs, according to the PBS report.

The medicines are best known for helping control diabetes and support weight loss. Researchers say they can also reduce appetite and food cravings by acting on the brain.

The hormone behind the drugs was studied decades ago. Work on a similar molecule found in Gila monster venom helped lead to the first GLP-1 treatment for human diabetes; a drug specifically for weight loss was approved in 2014.

Some patients lose as much as a quarter of their body weight. Doctors have also observed possible gains in cardiovascular health and reduced inflammation, while research into further uses continues.

Their growing reach has also brought questions and skepticism. PBS reporter William Brangham is examining the changes in a new series about GLP-1s and their impact on America.
