Death row inmate unconscious and on ventilator after botched execution lawyers s

Christa Pike, a Tennessee death row inmate, is conscious and speaking after surviving a failed execution attempt last week, her lawyers said, according to the BBC.

Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer. Two attempts to administer a lethal injection failed last Wednesday.

She was hospitalized and remained unconscious for several days as medical staff worked to remove the injected chemical from her body. Her lawyers described her recovery as medically unprecedented and said a long recovery was expected, while her prognosis remained uncertain.
