Paracetamol overdose Newport student makes miraculous recovery

Riley spent six weeks at King's College Hospital in London before moving back to an ICU in Newport

The parents of a student who suffered organ failure and nearly died after accidentally overdosing on paracetamol have spoken of the distress it caused and said they have "no idea how it happened so quickly".

After being placed on life support and enduring weeks in hospital, he went on to make a miraculous recovery, and has even relearned how to walk and talk.

Riley was enjoying his time at university when he got hit with a springtime cold which he described as feeling "pretty non-eventful".

Riley said he took both sets of tablets for approximately four days. He decided to phone 111 for help when his stomach started hurting.

His parents, Chris, 40 and Kate Lubas, 39, raced from Newport to be with their son.

"Hours later, at half one in the morning, I got a call from the ICU staff at the hospital saying we had to get there immediately," he added.

His parents were told Riley was heading towards liver failure, and they watched as his condition deteriorated to the point where he was delirious and hallucinating.

"We were so distressed and had no idea how this could have happened so quickly," Chris added.

His parents were asked about his paracetamol intake, and they were able to find the two medications and work out what had happened.

Riley bought the medicine as "people get freshers flu or colds all the time in the first year"
