Four-game losing streak prompted coaching staff shakeup: Matt Rhule says Nebraska needed change following loss to Illinois

Offensive staff change

Nebraska confirmed that Dana Holgorsen was no longer the team’s offensive coordinator shortly after its 24-13 defeat by Illinois on Friday. The move followed a four-game run of losses.

The change came five days after Rhule had praised Holgorsen as one of his generation’s top offensive minds. Rhule said the team had reached a point where he considered a new approach necessary.

Thomas takes play-calling

Glenn Thomas, Nebraska’s co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, will assume play-calling duties. The Cornhuskers have scored 54 points across their four straight defeats. Rhule said he wanted the Nebraska offense to move in another direction. The staff adjustment followed the loss to Illinois.

Rhule accepts responsibility

In a statement, Rhule said he was angry, disappointed and frustrated with the team’s season results. He also said the head coach bears responsibility for every part of the program, including wins and losses.

Rhule said making changes when warranted was his responsibility. He added that he continued to respect Holgorsen’s coaching ability and leadership.
