Maryland Basketball Routed by Georgetown, 86-74, as Rivalry Loss Stretches to Two Seasons

Georgetown Takes Control Early

Maryland opened with a 9-7 lead after a 7-0 run, but Georgetown soon seized control. Over roughly eight and a half minutes, the Hoyas outscored the Terps 22-8, with Jaland Lowe making two three-pointers during that stretch.

Maryland shot 36% from the field and made one of 11 attempts from beyond the arc in the first half. Georgetown went 15-for-30 from the field and 8-for-17 on threes, then closed the half with a 12-0 run to take a 16-point advantage.

Payne Leads Maryland Scoring

Senior center Pharrel Payne paced Maryland with 28 points, shooting 10-for-14 from the field and making all eight of his free throws. He also collected eight rebounds. The Terps struggled to create clear chances after halftime. Georgetown’s pressure contributed to turnovers and late shot attempts, while Maryland’s defense had difficulty getting set as the Hoyas scored in transition.

Late Push Falls Short

With less than five minutes left and Maryland down by 26, freshman Kaden House sparked a final effort. He scored 12 of his 13 points during that stretch, helping the Terps finish 12 points behind.

Georgetown’s physical play, size and penetration challenged Maryland throughout the game. The Terps committed 23 personal fouls, and their outside shooting remained a problem: they finished 3-for-20 from three-point range.

Lineup Changes And Next Game

Coach Buzz Williams tried several combinations, including four guards, Austin Brown alongside Payne in the front court, and a lineup featuring Tomislav Buljan and Payne against Georgetown’s seven-footer, Vince Iwuchukwu. Maryland is scheduled to host No. 9 Virginia on Friday, Nov. 13, for a Redout matchup. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m., with the game airing on Peacock.
