Black Panther 3's distant 2028 release puts it last among 8 upcoming superhero movies ranked by hype

A genre finding its footing

The superhero genre has faced uneven releases since Avengers: Endgame in 2019, following a strong run through the 2010s. After concerns early in the 2020s that the genre was fading, recent years have brought renewed success for Marvel and DC.

Superman helped launch the DCU, while the MCU has found its stride again, particularly after Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The ranking considers fan opinion, release dates, trailers, available information, potential and overall excitement, and includes films with confirmed release windows.

Marvel’s upcoming projects

Black Panther 3 is scheduled for 2028 and will complete a trilogy with T’Challa’s son as its new central character. Ryan Coogler is returning to direct, and David Jonsson has been cast, but little else is known; its distant release date is cited as the main reason it ranks last.

Avengers: Secret Wars is expected in 2027, though its release timing remains uncertain and production has not begun. Some cast members are confirmed while others remain rumors, but the film is expected to be the MCU’s biggest event since Endgame and may draw on the comic’s story.

Ghost Rider and Gotham

Marvel has announced Ghost Rider for 2028, with Shawn Levy directing and Ryan Gosling starring as the title character. The casting has fueled excitement, while fans may wait to see Levy and Gosling’s work together in Star Wars: Starfighter before judging the pairing further.

The Batman Part II has moved from its original 2026 plan to an early 2028 release. The 2022 film’s success has sustained interest, but news concerning Matt Reeves has raised concerns; filming is set to resume with Steven Soderbergh.
