Every Upcoming Disney Live-Action Remake in Development: What’s Moving Forward

Tangled moves toward release

Disney confirmed a live-action Tangled remake in late 2024. Michael Gracey is directing, with Teagan Croft as Rapunzel, Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider and Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel.

Lilo & Stitch sequel plans

Disney announced Lilo & Stitch 2 on June 26, 2025, following the first remake’s strong box office performance. The sequel is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 26, 2028.

Chris Sanders, the franchise co-creator and original voice of Stitch, will write and direct. Producer Jonathan Eirich is also returning, and Angel, also known as Experiment 624, is confirmed to appear.

Gaston gets a movie project

Disney is developing a Gaston movie after earlier discussion of a Disney+ series featuring Gaston and LeFou. The project was reported in December 2025, with Dave Callaham writing and Michelle Rejwan producing.

The film is described as an original take with a new actor, rather than a return by Luke Evans, and is said to have a swashbuckling tone. No firm updates have been reported since, but the project seemingly remains in development.

Stepsisters get a new spin

Another Cinderella project will focus on her stepsisters, Anastasia and Drizella. It is expected to offer a new version with a different cast, though few story details have been confirmed.

Akiva Schaffer is directing and writing with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. They are rewriting an original story by Michael Montemayor, who worked on Tangled. The project was reported in March 202—.

Remakes remain part of Disney’s plans

Disney’s live-action strategy gained momentum after Alice in Wonderland grossed over $1 billion in 2010. Between 2014 and 2019, the studio released 11 films in this category, including Maleficent, The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King and Aladdin; the last four each earned over $1 billion.

The 2020s have brought a slowdown amid the pandemic, strikes and diminishing box office returns, with some projects stalled or scrapped. The 2025 Lilo & Stitch remake showed continued audience interest, and Disney’s live-action remakes are expected to continue for the foreseeable future.
