DR Congo Ebola cases surpass 10,000 as growing outbreak leaves fastest response efforts challenged by unlinked infections

Cases spread across provinces

The outbreak is the fastest-growing in the country’s history and also its deadliest, according to figures from the DRC Ministry of Public Health. Around 80 percent of recent cases have emerged outside transmission chains tracked by health authorities.

Cases have been reported in 66 health zones spanning eight provinces, compared with three zones in the outbreak’s early days. The outbreak was declared on May 15 and is caused by Bundibugyo, an uncommon Ebola strain without an approved vaccine or treatment.

Trial and health service strains

The World Health Organization said on Friday that a vaccine’s first clinical trial had begun. Routine care has also been affected, including childhood vaccinations, while maternal deaths doubled in some provinces soon after the outbreak was declared.

Health workers have faced attacks amid public mistrust and dissatisfaction with the government response. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on X that people working to protect communities should be able to do so safely and with dignity.

Cross-border concerns

The outbreak has reached across borders more widely than any earlier Ebola epidemic, prompting governments and international organisations to work on containing infections. A patient was diagnosed while visiting Nigeria, making it the fourth African country affected, and was taken to Switzerland for treatment on Monday.

Nigerian officials introduced increased airport screening after the case. The article also says officials in an unnamed country reported no active infections after 20 cases, mostly imported from the DRC, and two deaths over the summer; it does not identify that country.

Key points

  • The DRC has confirmed 10,060 Ebola cases, with nearly half of those people dying.
  • About 80 percent of new cases fall outside monitored transmission chains.
  • The outbreak has reached 66 health zones in eight provinces and crossed national borders.
  • A vaccine trial has started, while the disease has disrupted routine care.
