Half of Cyberpunk 2077 sequel quest developers began as modders; CD Projekt Red gets official update, release teaser unknown

Release timing remains unclear
Cyberpunk 2, previously developed under the codename Project Orion, is still in production at CD Projekt Red. The studio has not announced when it will be released. The sequel is expected to come after The Witcher 4, which is targeting a 2028 launch. Development on the two franchises is taking place at the same time, and the Cyberpunk 2 team is growing.
Modders join the quest team
During a REDstreams presentation about Cyberpunk 2077’s Update 2.5, associate game director Paweł Sasko said roughly half of the sequel’s quest developers started out making fan mods for CD Projekt Red games. Sasko said many had worked on mods for The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3 before Cyberpunk 2077 was released. He described modding as a way to learn game development and begin a career in the industry.
Community work and future content
Sasko’s remarks came alongside an update to Cyberpunk 2077 that introduced cross-platform mod support. Players can browse and install supported community creations through the game, and the developer said easier access could encourage more people to create mods.
The estimate refers to the quest team, not the full Cyberpunk 2 staff. With the sequel’s narrative still largely undisclosed, the former modders’ involvement offers a glimpse of the people shaping its quests, rather than details of what those quests will contain.
