Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann top list if Michael Carrick is sacked

Howe and Nagelsmann emerge

Howe and Nagelsmann feature prominently on Manchester United’s list of potential replacements for Carrick, and both know of the club’s interest. Howe has been without a job since leaving Newcastle in the summer and is open to returning to management, according to sources.

Nagelsmann is available after leaving his role as Germany head coach following the World Cup. Before taking that job, he coached Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig, then led Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title in 2022 before being dismissed the following season.

Conte also interested

Conte is another candidate who is both available and interested in the Manchester United job. He left Napoli in June and has also been linked with Juventus. He won the Premier League with Chelsea in 2017 and the FA Cup the following year. At Tottenham, where he worked from November 2021 to March 2023, he helped the club qualify for the Champions League.

Other names in consideration

Unai Emery has a strong standing at United after guiding Aston Villa to Champions League qualification twice since joining in 2022. He has won five Europa League trophies with Sevilla, Villarreal and Villa, and also collected domestic honours during a two-year spell at Paris St-Germain.
