Third TV play-by-play change in five years: White Sox inform announcer John Schriffen contract won't be extended

Schriffen’s tenure ends
The White Sox informed Schriffen that his contract will end without an extension, according to MLB reporter Scott Merkin. Merkin also reported that a national search for a successor would begin immediately.
Schriffen, 42, became the club’s lead television play-by-play broadcaster before the 2024 season. He replaced Jason Benetti, who departed to call Detroit Tigers games amid issues related to the organization.
A difficult transition
Following Benetti, a widely celebrated national broadcaster, was a challenge. Schriffen drew strong criticism from local sports radio and some fans early in his tenure as he tried to build a connection with the fanbase.
Broadcast rankings improve
The White Sox booth, with Schriffen and Steve Stone, placed near the bottom of Awful Announcing’s local MLB broadcaster rankings in each season. Its position improved over time, moving from 30th in 2024 to 27th in 2025 and 21st in 2026.
Earlier this month, reports said Chicago Sports Network president and CEO Mike McCarthy had started considering possible replacements. The club has now confirmed that a broader search is underway.
Team thanks announcer
Brooks Boyer, the organization’s executive vice president and chief revenue/marketing officer, said Schriffen had brought energy and a distinctive approach to broadcasts during his three seasons. Boyer said the contract’s end was an appropriate moment to review the broadcasts’ direction and decide what would serve the team and fans.
The organization thanked Schriffen for his work and the relationship he developed with the fanbase, and wished him success in future endeavors. Schriffen continues to cover a range of sports for ESPN, including MLB, college sports, the UFL, NBA G League and Summer League.
