World leaders congratulate Brazil President Lula after historic election victory

Lula wins another term

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva won a historic fourth term in Sunday’s presidential election runoff in Brazil. The result drew congratulations from leaders around the world. Their messages pointed to opportunities for closer cooperation, including trade, environmental protection, economic integration and efforts to combat organized crime. One leader also praised the democratic character of the election.

Bolsonaro rejects the result

Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, a right-wing politician and son of the imprisoned former president, refused to concede defeat. He told journalists, “It is impossible to recognize the election results,” citing the circumstances of the vote.

Bolsonaro’s petition to annul the result faces a steep challenge: he trailed Lula by more than 4 million votes. Analysts said that margin makes success unlikely.

Campaign sought voting extension

Bolsonaro’s effort is also complicated by his own campaign’s request to extend voting. The campaign sought more time because heavy rains affected the conservative-leaning south. Meanwhile, leaders’ reactions emphasized Brazil’s ties with other countries. Messages referenced shared history and challenges, stronger bilateral relations and greater prosperity for both peoples.
