Deadspin: Shane Steichen Keeps Daniel Jones as Colts’ Starting QB for Jacksonville

Steichen sticks with Jones
Steichen told reporters Monday that Jones will start against Jacksonville. After Indianapolis’ loss to Minnesota, the coach said he had not considered making a change at quarterback. Steichen said Jones knows he needs to improve, adding that his confidence comes from Jones having shown he can perform better. He said the team needs to help Jones regain last season’s form, though the process is taking longer.

Numbers have fallen this season
In his first season with the Colts, Jones completed 68% of his passes for 3,101 yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions across 13 games. He tore his Achilles that season.
This year, Jones has completed a career-low 59.6% of his passes, with 1,398 yards, four touchdowns and seven interceptions. His interception total is one short of the NFL lead; over Indianapolis’ last four games, he has one touchdown and four interceptions.
Richardson is the backup
Jones, 29, was selected sixth overall in the 2019 NFL Draft. Across 90 career games with the Giants from 2019 to 2024 and the Colts, he has thrown for 19,081 yards, 93 touchdowns and 62 interceptions.
Anthony Richardson Sr., the Colts’ fourth overall pick in 2023, is the backup. He has played in 17 games, including 15 starts, completing 50.6% of his passes for 2,400 yards, 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
