Resident Evil Officially Becomes the Franchise’s Biggest Movie While Being Removed From 1,000 Theaters

A franchise box-office record

The film has earned approximately $153.7 million domestically and around $384.5 million worldwide. That total makes it the top-grossing installment in the Resident Evil movie franchise. The production budget was reported at $75 million. The result is a turnaround for a series that had spent more than two decades adapting Capcom’s video game franchise, despite receiving poor reviews from critics.

Fewer theaters, continued release

Resident Evil opened in 3,684 North American theaters on September 18. Its latest allocation is 2,148 locations, a decline of 1,536 theaters, or about 41.7 percent. The movie has not left theaters altogether: it remains in wide release and continues to attract audiences more than a month after its debut.

A courier faces an outbreak

The story centers on Bryan, a medical courier sent to deliver a package to a remote hospital. His routine assignment takes a frightening turn. A deadly outbreak transforms the surrounding area, and mutated creatures emerge. Bryan’s journey becomes a fight to survive.
