After controversial call, Skattebo takes aim at NFL: ‘Guess I’m going to play for free’ in Giants win

Penalty sparks sideline anger

Skattebo was penalized for unnecessary roughness during Sunday’s game against Houston. Officials ruled that he crossed the line when he hit safety M.J. Stewart after a substantial gain on a run.

Skattebo showed his anger, and Harbaugh had to restrain him on the sideline. The coach also made clear he disagreed with the flag.

Skattebo criticizes league

After the game, Skattebo declined to describe his exchange with the official. He said the NFL promotes his hard-running style but also penalizes him for it. Skattebo said he would continue running the way he wants, even if that brings more flags or fines. He added that he would keep playing hard for the Giants.

Overtime run sets up victory

Skattebo’s 42-yard run in overtime helped put New York in position to win. Devin Singletary then scored on a 30-yard touchdown, sealing the Giants’ victory over the Texans.

The league has sought to reduce helmet-to-helmet contact. Officials believed Skattebo led with the crown of his helmet on the play.
