After reports of cracked screens, Apple acknowledges iPhone Duo display issue and advises owners to contact AppleCare

Reports of inner-screen damage

Users began describing similar problems shortly after the iPhone Duo launched. Some said the hinge tightened, then the inner screen cracked when they opened the device. The damage has been reported with bright lines running from the center toward the right side of the display. An owner in Australia said an Apple Store replaced their phone immediately.

Apple advises affected owners

Apple told Bloomberg and 9to5Mac that it knows of an issue affecting the inner displays of a small number of iPhone Duo units. The company said owners with affected devices should contact AppleCare for a replacement. The Verge said it had contacted Apple about the reports but had not received an on-the-record response about the problems.

iFixit examines possible cause

iFixit published a teardown of the phone over the weekend and offered a possible explanation for the cracking. Its examination showed that the foldable screen may press against a bar in the center of the device. The iPhone Duo is among the first devices released after John Ternus became Apple’s CEO, succeeding Tim Cook.
