23 Years Later, Disney Has Found a Walking Dead Replacement With Superpowers

A familiar survival story

The Walking Dead has long set a high bar for zombie fiction, pairing constant danger with characters whose decisions and relationships shape the story. Marvel Zombies: War Zone follows a similar path, placing survivors in harsh situations where alliances and personal losses matter.

The comic is not the first entry in Marvel’s zombie series, but its early issues have prompted comparisons with The Walking Dead. The article describes the series as five issues long and says it has reached its second issue.

Superheroes among survivors

In issue #2, Luke Cage, Linda Carter’s Night Nurse and Danny Rand’s Iron Fist are sheltering with other survivors in Harlem. Frank Castle, the Punisher, recognizes the value of their community, saying, “Something to live for. To die for.”

The characters’ powers change how they face familiar dangers. Luke Cage’s unbreakable skin protects him from zombie bites, while Iron Fist cauterizes his arm after it is bitten and the Punisher removes it.

A threat beyond the undead

The series also raises questions about the outbreak and the transformed heroes and villains. Zombie Thor’s inability to wield Mjolnir suggests that becoming a zombie may limit some characters’ powers.

The solicitation for issue #3 says the Punisher will investigate the epidemic in Hell’s Kitchen. It also describes a zombified Daredevil and Bullseye threatening the streets, with Elektra drawn into Frank Castle’s conflict.

Issue three release date

The solicitation presents Frank Castle as facing a choice that could bring him and Elektra together or set them against each other. The issue is scheduled to arrive on November 25, 2026. Disney and Marvel have also been expanding their horror offerings through Marvel Comics’ Midnight line and the Marvel Zombies animated series on Disney+.
