Taylor Sheridan Favorite Officially Returns in a Wild Western Series Reimagining

Reeves’ earlier television story
Created by Chad Feehan, with Taylor Sheridan as an executive producer, Lawmen: Bass Reeves followed Reeves’ rise as one of the first Black Deputy U.S. Marshals west of the Mississippi. David Oyelowo played the former enslaved man who built a career that included more than 3,000 arrests.
The series earned acclaim and became Paramount+’s most-watched global premiere in 2023. A second season has not advanced, and any continuation was expected to shift attention to a different Old West enforcer through an anthology format.
A new version on Netflix
Netflix is preparing a reimagining of Reeves’ legend with Bass X Machina, an adult animated series set to arrive Tuesday, November 3. The eight episodes place the character in a dangerous, steampunk West.
Brian Tyree Henry voices this version of Bass, who works as a bounty hunter rather than a marshal. With a prosthetic arm, he takes on outlaws, mechanical menaces and supernatural forces.
A mission with wider stakes
The government calls on Bass for a mission to prevent the Confederacy’s resurrection. His pursuit of justice is meant to make life safer for his family, but his actions may put the people he hopes to protect at risk.
The new series offers a sharp contrast with Lawmen: Bass Reeves, while keeping the historical figure at its center. It recasts his story as a science-fiction Western rather than a continuation of the Paramount+ drama.
